Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)
Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a spine surgery in which the lumbar spine or lower back is approached through an incision in the back to place interbody implants or bone graft between two vertebaes for spinal stabilization. Orange County orthopaedic surgeon Todd Peters, MD is highly experienced in TLIF and has completed numerous TLIF procedures.
Interbody fusion involves removing the intervertebral disk and implanting a metal, plastic, or bone spacer in between the two adjoining vertebrae. These spacers usually contain bone graft material to promote bone healing and facilitate the fusion. After the spacer is inserted, metal screws, plates, and rods are used to further stabilize the spine.
