Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF)

Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) is a minimally invasive procedure performed through the side of the body to access the spinal disorders, rather than from the front or back and sparing major back muscles, bones and ligaments. This technique reduces long-term back or leg pain that has not responded to steroid injections, physical therapy and pain medication. Orange County orthopaedic surgeon Todd Peters, MD is highly experienced in XLIF and has completed numerous XLIF procedures.

Interbody fusion involves removing the intervertebral disk and implanting a metal, plastic, or bone spacer in between the two adjoining vertebrae. These spacers usually contain bone graft material to promote bone healing and facilitate the fusion. After the spacer is implanted, metal screws, plates, or rods are used to secure and stabilize the spine.
