Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)
Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a procedure performed to access the spine from the front, avoiding the nerves and moving organs and blood vessels to the side. Orange County orthopaedic surgeon Todd Peters, MD is highly experienced in ALIF and has completed numerous ALIF procedures.
Interbody fusion involves removing the intervertebral disk and implanting a metal, plastic, or bone spacer in between the two adjoining vertebrae. These spacers usually contain bone graft material to promote bone healing and facilitate the fusion. After the spacer is inserted, metal screws, plates, and rods are used to further stabilize the spine.
