What are stem cells?
By definition, stem cells are biologically undifferentiated cells that have the capability to grow into specific cells. All adult humans make their own supply of stem cells to replace degenerated tissue in their body when needed. This natural healing process is constant throughout adult life, although it can become less efficient in old age or as a result of repeated inflammation. Stem cells are the basic building blocks of life from which our bodies are made. They are formed at conception and specialized to become all the different tissues of the body– muscle, nerve, organs, bone, blood, etc. As regenerative progenitor cells, they lead the creation of new cells.
How do stem cells work?
Stem cells are progenitor cells, which are capable of regenerating and differentiating into a wide range of specialized cell types. Stem cells follow inflammatory signals from damaged tissues and have multiple ways of repairing these damaged areas.
