Kyphosis

Kyphosis Treatment in Newport Beach

Kyphosis is a condition in which the spine curves more than what is consider normal. Although kyphosis can inflict anyone, it is much more common among older women.

Kyphosis can be caused by a variety of different factors such as:

  • Disc Degeneration
  • Cancer/cancer treatment
  • Birth defects/syndromes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Scheuermann’s disease

Mild cases will show no symptoms at all while other extreme cases can cause pain and stiffness in the back.

To diagnose kyphosis, your Newport Beach orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Todd Peters will perform a complete and thorough physical examination as well as a medical history check. He may also request X-Rays, MRIs, and CT scans to better assess your case.

X-Rays – A type of quick imaging process using electromagnectic waves to better show Dr. Peters bones of the body to pinpoint possible sources of pain.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – This type of imaging uses radiology to show Dr. Peters the soft tissues of the body like muscles, disks, nerves, and the spinal cord.

Computerized tomography (CT) – CT scans are X-ray scans taken from various angles to create a cross-section of bones and soft tissues of the body.

Depending on the severity of your case, Dr. Peters will make his recommendations. Firstly, he will recommend non-surgical spine treatments such as spinal injections to help manage any pain.

Dr. Peters may recommend minimally invasive spine surgery if the kyphosis curve is interfering with any nerves or spinal cord.
